font-size: 14pt\">Dans les charivaris, les jeunes d\u00e9noncent ou se moquent de ceux qui ne sont pas encore mari\u00e9s, des adult\u00e8res, des remariages, des cocus ou de ceux qui ont jou\u00e9 leurs femmes aux d\u00e9s. Parfois, ceux-ci sont men\u00e9s \u00e0 travers le village ou la ville \u00e0 dos d&#8217;\u00e2ne. Il n&#8217;est pas rare non plus que la f\u00eate devienne agressive et qu&#8217;on y r\u00e8gle des comptes.C\u2019est un rituel collectif occidental, tr\u00e8s similaire au carnaval. Il s&#8217;en distingue toutefois en ce qu&#8217;il n&#8217;est pas li\u00e9 au calendrier. Il s&#8217;agit d&#8217;un cort\u00e8ge dans lequel de nombreux musiciens et passants font du bruit avec toutes sortes d&#8217;objets, g\u00e9n\u00e9ralement d\u00e9tourn\u00e9s de leur usage traditionnel (ustensiles de cuisine). Cette &#8220;contre-musique&#8221; fait pendant aux musiques religieuses, \u00e0 l&#8217;harmonie. C&#8217;est une parodie. Le terme d\u00e9signe aussi bien le d\u00e9fil\u00e9 en lui-m\u00eame qu&#8217;un bruit discordant g\u00e9n\u00e9r\u00e9 par de nombreuses personnes, du tapage ou encore du bruit accompagn\u00e9 de d\u00e9sordre. Dans ce dernier cas on parle aussi de <em>chahut<\/em>. Le rituel est attest\u00e9 d\u00e8s le XIVeme si\u00e8cle . Les Goliards durent affronter le m\u00e9contentement de l&#8217;\u00c9glise pour leurs d\u00e9bordements satiriques. En 1289 il fut interdit \u00e0 tout clerc d\u2019\u00eatre un goliard. Apr\u00e8s 1300, les privil\u00e8ges eccl\u00e9siastiques leur furent d\u00e9finitivement retir\u00e9s.
